In April 2011 Talacris (now Grifols) Biotherapeutics approached STNinJC to determine the interest in serving as a conduit, with funding from Talecris, to build ramps and perform small home repairs for the elderly and physically impaired. We enthusiastically accepted their proposal and with $13,200 in funding from Talecris, from April through June, 2011, 18 projects were completed. Projects were selected from an approved list, provided by the Council on Aging and the Johsnston County Department of Social Services. It is estimated that volunteers from STNinJC and local churches spent 712 man hours performing this work.
Under the leadership of our current president, Royal Williams, this work continues. Following the conclusion of the Talacris initiative in June 2011, over 62 additional projects from Clayton to Kenly, Pine Level, Selma, and Smithfield, have been completed to date. STN provides free labor for our projects. However, each client is asked to provide some funding for materials and supplies for their ramp or small home repair. Other funding comes from our members, churches, and other community organizations.
