Duke Energy Assistance Programs for the Winter Months
Duke Energy sponsors or supports two programs to assist customers who may need assistance with their power bills or energy efficiency during the winter months
Share the Warmth (STW)
Provides financial assistance for heating bills during the winter season for low income families within the Duke Energy service territory in the Carolinas.
Helping Home Fund –
Duke Energy’s Helping Home Fund offers free assistance for income-qualified customers to make their homes more energy efficient. Eligible customers receive a complete home energy assessment and assistance to help save energy bills. This may include health and safety repairs; appliance replacement (refrigerators, washing machines and room air conditioners); heating and cooling system repair (up to $600) and heating and cooling system replacement.
Qualification to participate in Duke Energy’s Helping Home Fund does not guarantee a customer’s receipt of any funding for home improvements but is strictly contingent upon appropriate funding availability.
- Applicant must be a North Carolina Duke Energy customer with an active account, and
- Have household income that’s at or below 200 percent of the Federal Poverty Guidelines
Duke Energy’s Helping Home Fund is administered by the North Carolina Community Action Association. The program is available to owner- and renter-occupied residences and to apartment dwellings with owner approval.

Provides assistance to homeowners struggling to make their mortgage payments due to job loss or temporary financial hardship, such as divorce, illness or death of a spouse. The Fund also assists returning veterans who are transitioning to civilian jobs.
Offers free housing counseling, access to legal services for people with lower incomes, and help with your mortgage service.
For qualified homeowners, the Fund can provide an interest-free loan of up to $36,000 to pay your mortgage and other related expenses for up to 36 months while you search or retrain for new employment. If you are currently employed but have a second mortgage that is unaffordable because of a prior job loss or reduced income, the Fund offers an interest-free loan of up to $30,000 to pay off your second mortgage.
The Fund may be able to reinstate loans if you have fallen behind on payments due to a job loss but are now eligible for retirement, Social Security, disability or Veterans Administration benefits that would allow you to resume mortgage payments. The Fund provides assistance at no cost to you.
